PRESS STATEMENT FROM MINISTER
Minister Hanafin said "I am particularly pleased that the new 1000 pupil post primary school for the Donabate/Portrane area is going ahead now and I wish to thank Fingal County Council for its cooperation in making a site available for the school." The Minister went on to say that she has asked County Dublin VEC to establish the school early in a temporary location ahead of delivery of the permanent school building project.

Minister Hanafin went on to say "the Donabate/Portrane project had originally been considered for delivery under the PPP model but because of the unique agreement regarding the provision of school accommodation and ancillary facilities now in place between Fingal County Council and the Department of Education & Science, it is more appropriate that the project be procured directly rather than as part of a PPP bundle of schools."

Secondary School – Update

18th September 2006

Dear Parents,
It is with a deep sense of frustration that we are writing to you again. Over the summer months we have been working hard to make sure that our secondary school is included in the next bundle of capital projects to be announced by Minister Hanafin. We know that many of you are waiting anxiously for the proposed opening date of the new school. We are still committed to opening our school in 2008 even if it has to be in temporary accommodation. During the summer we examined possible temporary sites with the County Manager of Fingal County Council.

The Department of Education and Fingal County Council have not finalised signing over of the site. Also there is no agreement on the management structure for the school and Mary Hanafin will not sanction the school until these issues are resolved. We met high level officials from DES in June who assured us that; the site issues would be sorted out over the summer; and that Donabate was considered a high priority case. Evidently, this is not the case.

The last time we asked for your help you responded magnificently and we delivered over 1,500 signed letters to the Department of Education. They barely acknowledged your efforts. The time for talking is over. This community demands that the government delivers on its promises immediately. You must make this happen by being more vocal than ever before to ensure the school opens in 2008.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN BY PUTTING PRESSURE ON BERTIE AHERN, MINISTER HANAFIN AND YOUR OTHER PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVES TO ENSURE DONABATE IS SANCTIONED IN THE NEXT ANNOUNCEMENT OF SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECTS.

The Committee is launching a high profile campaign to publicise our disgraceful situation. Please help us to get your children’s school sanctioned. Email/write/phone the Department of Education expressing your outrage (Email: mary.hanafin@education.gov.ie). In the meantime, it would be advisable to continue to try and find places in other secondary schools.

We will also be staging a public demonstration on Saturday 23rd September at 2.30 on the school site at the rear of the Community Centre. We urge you and your children to come along and show your support.

Parents and Children protest and hand in 1500 petitions to the Department of Education and Science On Friday 7th April

Donabate Portrane Second-Level School Project.
Minister announces P.P.P. Donabate post primary school by 2009. Project Committee Chair, Bob Dowling, states enrollment to begin soon.
==================================

The Donabate Portrane Second-Level School Project was established in 2002 following a forum on educational provision. The Committee consists of representatives from the Community Council, Chamber of Commerce, the principals, Parents’ Council and Board of Management representatives of the three local primary schools and other interested parties.

A public meeting, organised by the secondary school committee, took place on Wednesday 15th June at 20.00 in D.P.C.C. The committee thanks everyone for attending the meeting. The project now has an official patron, i.e. C.D.V.E.C., and a model of school, i.e. a non-designated community college.

Bob Dowling, committee chair, sent a letter to Minister Mary Hanafin on Thursday, 16th June, updating her and informing the committtee have fully complied with all her requests.
